Ventura Valdez Poetry Awards Are Announced for 2011
Gival Press is pleased to announce the winners of the Ventura Valdez Poetry contest it sponsors at Montgomery College for present and past students.
The winners for the English and Spanish contests each received a prize of $100.00 and a certificate.
Winner of the 2011 Ventura Valdez English Poetry Award
Family Meal Time
Twin shores of Mother and Father:
The parents wordlessly emit a hum
"We held their shoulders like roses.
We loved their eyelids like violets,"
While giant offspring slouch over the evening meal.
These are the homes where the warmth
Vibrates and wiggles and rises
Silently over roofs
Wrinkling the air so thoroughly
Trees wiggle softly
As if seen through old glass.
And at the dinner table
Any pain runs away like rushing water,
Because there is love in the soup.
Love lies wedged with the small dirt
Between floorboards, under radiators.
All this kindness, all these gifts
And still my constant worry
"What if this were always?"

El amor en silencio
Me encierro en mis sueños y mis pasiones cada vez que te veo.
Deseo mostrarte el mundo y conocer junto a ti las siete maravillas del mundo.
Quisiera llegar a la puerta de tu corazón pero tu silencio me impide
mis mayores anhelos.
Dime cómo puedo hablarte si tu silencio me mata.
¿O acaso no te gusta dialogar?
Escapándome de esta realidad en que vivo cierro mis ojos.
Sólo por un segundo y sueño contigo.
Pero no puedo dormir en paz porque tu rostro me persigue
Hasta lo más profundo de mis pretenciones.
En mis sueños bajo hasta los más profundo del mar
Y me ahogo en tus entrañas.
Subo hasta el cielo y te encuentro callada y tranquila.
Mirándome me sonríes pero de repente llego a la realidad
Con su suspiro muy profundo. Y me digo a mí mismo
Que el amor que siento por ti está nada más en silencio.
